Sitting Around Can Lead to Back Strain and Other Health Concerns

Sitting Around Can Lead to Back Strain and Other Health ConcernsLife involves a lot of sitting. Many of us spend long hours commuting to work only to hurry up and sit some more. And technology isn’t helping much – nearly everything is right there on your desk at the touch of a button. All of that can add up to a whole lot of sitting. While sitting for long stretches is a seemingly necessary part of our modern lives, it’s not the healthiest option and can lead to back strain and other health concerns.

Get Proactive

Sitting exerts nearly twice as much spinal stress as standing does, but face it, there’s probably not much you can do to avoid sitting for long stretches on any given day. There are, however, some great strategies you can employ to mitigate the effects:

  • Improve your seated posture by sitting up straight with your shoulders back while maintaining your spine’s natural lower curve and by avoiding the dreaded forward slouch, which exacerbates stress on your spine.
  • Give yourself a break by getting out of your chair every 30 minutes or so – even if it’s just to stand up and stroll to the water cooler. Breaking up long stretches of sitting with short interruptions can go a long way toward alleviating the negative effects of protracted sitting. Any added movement in your day helps your muscles, joints, and ligaments loosen up and stay flexible, which is crucial to overall comfort and health.
  • Consider other options by experimenting with alternatives like standing desks and by reimagining your workday in a way that incorporates more movement – meeting with people face-to-face rather than on the phone, making the local coffee house part of your coffee break routine, heading out for lunch instead of eating a pb&j at your desk, dropping your mail in the mailbox rather than in the outbox. Go ahead and get creative. Think of it as a way to bolster your networking while you move more.

Chiropractic care has got your back, and an experienced chiropractor can help you optimize your daily routine by incorporating back-healthy strategies.
