Shoulder Pain and Chiropractic Care

Tampa Bay ChiropractorShoulder pain is certainly not uncommon. Since more and more office workers spend more and more time performing repetitive tasks at a computer, it’s really no surprise. All of that repetitive hand and arm movement can lead inexorably to shoulder pain that’s caused by a cumulative trauma disorder. Shoulder pain is usually associated with one of three primary causes.

The Three Major Causes of Shoulder Pain

  • Acute shoulder pain is usually caused by a traumatic shoulder event or a shoulder injury.
  • Cumulative trauma disorder (as above) is pain that’s caused by repetitive movements in the shoulder area and/or in the upper extremities and that builds up over time.
  • Chronic shoulder pain is that shoulder pain that lasts for longer than three months. Chronic shoulder pain is usually caused by either acute shoulder pain or a cumulative trauma disorder.

Shoulder Pain Treatment

Most people simply try to live with shoulder pain. Sometimes their shoulder pain will subside, and that works fine. Other people pop pain meds that help to mask the pain but are rarely therapeutic and often come with their own set of complications. When the pain becomes too intrusive, many people will ultimately visit their doctor. Even the traditional medical model, however, is beginning to look toward an initial conservative treatment approach for musculoskeletal pain like shoulder pain. Chiropractic care is a great example of such a conservative approach.

An experienced chiropractor will consult with you about your shoulder pain, its duration, and its possible cause(s). Your chiropractor will examine you, will apply an appropriate chiropractic adjustment tailored for your condition, and will physically work with your body to help you heal and to help you alleviate your shoulder pain. Further, your chiropractor will offer some helpful exercises for you to practice at home – and maybe some healthy lifestyle tweaks to aid in your recovery. The goal of chiropractic care is to help you on the path toward pain-free shoulders without invasive treatments or strong medications.
