Over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications have become ubiquitous, and many people pop them at the first sign of pain or just as a matter of course. However, they’re not without troublesome side effects. Chiropractic care is often a better choice when it comes to effective and long-lasting pain relief. In fact, chiropractic care can actually help you reduce – rather than simply mask – your painful symptoms without the need for medication. Consider your pain-relief options carefully.
Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen
The two most common OTC pain medications are acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) and ibuprofen (e.g., Advil), which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Both types of OTC pain medication can provide distinct symptomatic relief for mild to moderate pain, and both have unique benefits and side effects that must be taken into consideration:
- Acetaminophen is used as an OTC pain medication to reduce pain and fever, but it’s also combined with other pain medications in prescription form. Unlike ibuprofen, it has no ability to reduce inflammation or decrease blood clotting. Acetaminophen has been identified as the primary cause of drug-induced liver failure in the U.S. and is contraindicated for people who drink alcohol regularly. In fact, acetaminophen – even at therapeutic doses – can cause both kidney and liver damage. Regular use of acetaminophen is also linked to an increased risk for kidney cancer.
- Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are commonly used to reduce both pain and inflammation and are available in both over-the-counter and prescription forms. Regular NSAID usage can increase your risk for kidney disorder or altered kidney function. NSAIDs are also known to damage the tissue in your gastrointestinal tract, which can cause serious upset stomachs, and to inhibit blood cell coagulation or blood clotting.
Risks and Relief
Popping a Tylenol or an NSAID to battle your aches and pains on the odd occasion is probably not a big deal. Relying on them for consistent pain relief, on the other hand, is not a good idea; the risks are too great. A healthier choice is to seek conservative care, such as chiropractic, which is equipped to both diagnose the cause of your pain and to help you find long-lasting relief.
