Research consistently demonstrates that chiropractic care can be the most effective approach in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, such as back pain, sciatica, and neck pain. A recent study out of Switzerland further clarifies the efficacy of chiropractic care. This research compares chiropractic care to traditional medical care in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. This study concludes that chiropractic care is the most effective initial choice for any such pain.
Musculoskeletal pain is usually caused by an injury to your joints, muscles, bones, tendons, nerves or ligaments. These injuries can be caused in any number of ways, including falls, accidents, a direct blow to the affected area, or even by turning or twisting awkwardly. Even the wear and tear of daily living can lead to musculoskeletal pain. It’s not an uncommon condition, and many people resort to popping over-the-counter medications before eventually seeking traditional medical care.
In this Swiss study, the researchers followed nearly 1,000 people who presented with spinal, hip, or shoulder pain. About half sought relief from a medical doctor, the rest received chiropractic care. After four months of prescribed treatment, all the subjects filled out a recovery survey. The compiled results are significant:
- Those who initially consulted with MDs didn’t experience as significant a decrease in their numeric pain-rating score.
- Those who initially consulted with MDs were considerably less satisfied with the quality and outcome of their care.
- Those who initially consulted with MDs paid significantly more for the health care they received.
Ultimately, this study determines that the best course of action is to seek initial chiropractic care for musculoskeletal pain. Additionally, accurately directing such issues toward initial chiropractic intervention allows medical providers to focus on more complex medical issues. If a complex case does seek initial chiropractic care, chiropractors are well positioned to refer the case on to a traditional doctor or to co-manage the client’s care with the primary medical provider for optimal overall care.
