Antibiotics save lives and provide much-needed comfort. They aren’t always the answer, however, and they shouldn’t always be the first line of defense. The overuse of antibiotics continues to contribute to a concerning list of negative side effects, not the least of which is the increase in antibiotic-resistant infections.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to identify a specific class of antibiotics – fluoroquinolones, which include Cipro and Levaquin – as causing increasingly troubling side effects. This class of antibiotics can lead to severe tendon damage. In fact, enough cases have occurred that the FDA has added a black-box warning to the drug’s label. Additionally, the FDA has issued a warning that relates the use of fluoroquinolones to permanent nerve damage. Finally, the FDA has changed its recommendations and now advises that fluoroquinolones should be held back until other classes of antibiotics have been tried and found ineffective. Other major medical groups agree with the FDA’s findings and have similarly changed their recommendations.
There is a disconnect, however, between this research and how the medical community is reacting. Studies indicate that there’s been very little decrease in the prescription of fluoroquinolones outside the hospital setting. Although the overuse of any antibiotic can lead to increased resistance, fluoroquinolones seem to be even more prone to creating bugs that are resistant to its effects. Don’t rely on your medical provider to be aware of and adhere to forthcoming warnings and recommendations regarding antibiotics. Get informed. By keeping up with the research and by heeding updated warnings, you can become a more proactive advocate for your family’s continued health and well-being.
Chiropractic Care: A Gentler Approach
While antibiotics are often crucial for effectively treating medical conditions, using them as the primary approach to every condition can lead to harmful side effects and diminished effectiveness over time. Chiropractic care is often a better option for a variety of illnesses that are traditionally treated with antibiotics. This includes two of the most common ailments associated with antibiotic prescriptions – ear and sinus infections. Don’t rely on harsh medications that may not even help – especially if your infection is viral. Instead look to chiropractic care, which offers a kinder, gentler (and healthier) approach to wellness.
